Faculty: MICHAEL DOWLING

Michael Dowling became Director of the ALA Chapter Relations and International Relations Offices in April 2002.  Before taking charge of both offices he served as Director of the International Relations Office for three and a half years.

During his tenure in the International Relations Office, Michael has worked to promote the development of library associations around the world.  He has made presentations on the role of library associations in Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, and has provided presentations on ALA to delegations from 30 countries that have visited the United States.

Michael helped to coordinate the record-setting International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Conference in Boston in 2001.  He is currently coordinating the ‘Campaign for the World’s Libraries’ a joint partnership between ALA and IFLA to promote the value of libraries and librarians worldwide.

Prior to assuming his current duties, Michael served as the Deputy Director of the ALA Reference and User Services Association.  He also served as the Director of the Monroe [Wisconsin] Public Library and as a librarian at Temple University Japan in Tokyo.  Michael received his MLS from the University of Maryland and his B.A. in History and Anthropology from Albion College in Michigan.
